A new convenience center has opened in Cumberland County, replacing a closed center in the Woody community.
The new $100,000 convenience center occupies about an acre of land compared to the old Woody Convenience Center, which sat on about one-tenth of an acre. The Woody Center closed because the new Highway 127 North will cut through the property. Director of Sanitation Conrad Welch said the new center allows for cars and trucks to easily get in and out of the property.
“So everything that we have there is going to be easier to switch around,” Welch said. “The old Woody Center when the trucks came, we had to close it in order to have the trucks on site. This one will allow us to stay open the whole while we’re switching out cans, so there shouldn’t be any down time.”
The new convenience center is a mile south of the old location on the same side of the road. The new center offers the community more bins and takes more categories of waste like furniture.
“The old Woody was our smallest center,” Welch said. “This one is built for the growth we’ve had on the north side of the county.”
Welch said the old Woody Center took metal, but the can was the size of a desk. The new metal bin will be a 40-yard container.
“It will have a ramp, where people can drive on a ramp and dump their items,” Welch said. “Similar to what we have in town, so they won’t have to drag stuff into bins.”
The trash compactor at the new center is currently broken down after it was noticed it was rusting out when moving locations. Welch said it will be back up and running next week.
The new convenience center has grant money coming in later this month that will be put toward fencing in the facility.
