New Algood Park Opening For Public Use Next Week

The first phase of Algood’s new park is complete.

The city will open the new facilities for public use on July 21st. City Administrator Keith Morrison said residents will see a new entrance, parking lot, bathroom and walkway.

“Working through that process has been a pretty lengthy process,” Morrison said. “So, we’re just excited to get this first phase open and get something over there for people to use, walk, exercise and enjoy the outdoors.”

Morrison said rising costs will require the city council to reevaluate future phases. A master plan was created for the park in 2019 that included an amphitheater, splash pad and playgrounds.

“Originally, it was about five phases, but I think looking at the costs and all that we are trying to do we’re going to have to sit down and reevaluate,” Morrison said. ” So in the next few months, we’re going to talk about what do we do from here.”

Morrison said he would like to have that feedback by the end of the fiscal year. That way whatever is decided can be in the new budget and long-term plan. Morrison said the new facilities take up a quarter of the 21 acre park on Main Street.

“Do we change the components from the original plan or do we just try to do it through a more gradual process,” Morrison said. “In the next few months, the council is going to be looking at the park and usage.”

Morrison said a ribbon cutting will be held at 9:00 a.m. on July 21st at 461 West Main Street.
