New welcome signs for the City of Monterey could be set in stone at the next Board of Alderman meeting.
The Hometown Project Committee met Thursday to discuss a welcome sign project. The entrance signs would be made from stone with engraved lettering. Committee Member Julie Bohannon said if the proposal is passed the signs will be at Interstate 40 Exits 300 and 301.
“We were trying to pay tribute to our historical past, such as the Standing Stone and then our vistas are all stone,” Bohannon said.
Two other signs along state routes 62 and 84 were considered. The project is estimated at some $8,000, but Bohannon said they have enough donated funds from the city’s quasquicentennial event to fund it. The chairman will present the proposal during September’s meeting.
Holding the meeting gave board members the chance to bring the committee back to life. Bohannon said it was dissolved at one point but is now back on track.
“It just went a little by the wayside, so we needed to rejuvenate that committee, and bring it back to life,” Bohannon said. “It was a really good project and we raised a lot of money and people were excited about it and we’re hoping that bringing it back to life will continue the momentum that we had.”
The committee approved Nathan Walker as the new chairman, Julie Bohannon as the treasurer, and Bree Bilbrey as the secretary.
Other business included placing a plaque commemorating donors for the project will be hung in City Hall soon. In addition, the committee considered replacements of damaged historical posts at Standing Stone and the Post Office.
