Monterey Working Through Policy & Procedure Overview

Monterey Aldermen considered changes to the town’s policies and procedures handbook during a work session Monday night.

Mayor Alex Garcia said he and the aldermen reviewed a handbook created by MTAS to see what changes needed to be made to best fit Monterey. Garcia said the town is looking to make changes due to insurance reasons.

“We come to find out have not really adopted policies and procedures,” Garcia said. “We have an employee handbook that everybody signs. This is just something that Public Entity Partners our insurance company has asked us to do.

Garcia said the aldermen are looking to remove the human resources department policies from the handbook as the town does not have one. Garcia said several other changes will be made because some policies contradict each other.

“There is one right off the bat that said something about all employees must require direct deposit,” Garcia said. “Then it said if you need to pick up your checking in person then you can assign somebody to do that. Well, if everybody is required to have a direct deposit then we shouldn’t have to have someone picking up a check in person.”

Garcia said he has called MTAS and requested an electronic copy so the town can make changes to it.

“We will go ahead and make the changes that we want,” Garcia said. “I’ll send that back out to the board and they can re-read and then as long as everyone is good with it we can then vote on it.”

Garcia said he hopes to have the changes adopted during February’s aldermen meeting.

Garcia said the changes will not include anything with the town’s code. Garcia said the town is still looking into changing the town’s code which will be addressed at a later time.
