Monterey’s building codes now more in line with the county’s rules and regulations.
Aldermen approved updating the town’s building code to the 2018 building codes that the county uses. Monterey Mayor Mark Farley said Putnam County is doing inspections for the town and has made minor changes to the code since 2018.
“We are a little bit behind on catching up with the codes,” Farley said. “We need to update to the 2018 building codes. We have been waiting on some paperwork from the county to see what their guidelines are and see where it falls.”
The updated codes come from the 2018 edition of the International Code Council and are to be used during building inspections. Aldermen Alex Garcia said the updated codes would make it easier for the county to do inspections within Monterey.
“I don’t think it was a conflicting issue,” Garcia said. “Since they are doing our codes we had to adopt the 2018 building codes which is just something we would have to do anyway, we should have done it before.”
Garcia said building codes are supposed to be updated every seven years. The previous code the town used was the 2015 building code.
“They have some stuff that they took out and some stuff that they have put in,” Farley said. “They are doing our inspections now so we need to try and stay with theirs right now. They got another two years before their codes run out.”
