Monterey To Discuss New Funding For Flood Mitigation Project

Money allocated from Governor Bill Lee’s administration might be used to fund the second phase of Monterey’s flood mitigation project.

Mayor Bill Wiggins said the $46,790 would place a new culvert and stormwater channel system under Railroad Avenue.

“This will compliment our efforts to alleviate flooding in Whitaker Park and on the North side of the railroad tracks,” Wiggins said.

The funding comes from Governor Lee’s new initiative to give cities and counties one-time capital improvement grants. The board of aldermen will consider a resolution on Monday to submit an application for the grant funding.

A separate $124,000 project has already begun near the Monterey Police Department property. That work program involves the installation of new drain basins and piping under the town’s rail trail. Crews will also look at cleaning out existing piping running along Commercial Avenue.

“This latest proposal will be on top of the one that’s already underway,” Wiggins said. “It’s a separate program to work on that waterway on the south side of the railroad tracks.”

Governor Lee announced the $100 million grant initiative during his state of the state address earlier this month.
