Monterey Still Considering Online Bill Pay

Monterey residents may soon be able to pay property taxes and water bills online.

Alderman Nathan Walker said the feature could be beneficial for residents who don’t live in Monterey.

“Especially for the property taxes, and for people who own property in Monterey but don’t live here,” Walker said. “That makes it a whole lot easier to be able to pay that online.”

The board of mayor and aldermen will consider adding online bill pay to a new city website that will launch in the near future. The city would pay $1,058 to install the online bill pay system and $2,000 annually for software support. Customers who choose to utilize the service would pay a $2.95 fee that would be collected by the service provider.

Vice Mayor Starlett Wessells said she’s opposed to the online bill pay option.

“Couldn’t they just mail it in? They know for a year that they are going to be paying those property taxes,” Wessells said. “If they can’t do it, they deserve to be charged the penalty.”

The technology committee will have further discussions on the topic later this month.
