The Monterey Police Department will begin a walk with a cop program as the new school year gets underway.
Monterey Police Chief Bill Randolph said he hopes to begin the program within the next few weeks.
“It was a program that I saw a police department out West do at the end of last year,” Randolph said. “There’s a couple of good reasons to do it. You build a rapport with the kids by walking them to school, but it also promotes health by walking to school.”
If successful, Randolph said he plans to start a ride with a cop program, which would allow officers to ride bikes to school with the children.
“We will meet in the depot parking lot and walk the trail over to the school from there,” Randolph said. “It’s about building a rapport with the students and having some one-on-one time when they walk.”
