Monterey Officials Deny Billboard Request

Monterey’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a recommendation last night to deny a request that would have allowed the location of a billboard in a C-1 commercial zone.

The issue involved a private citizen that had requested to place a billboard on property that the city’s police station currently sits on.

The town’s current zoning ordinance does not allow billboards to locate in C-1 zones.

“I don’t think we need to allow any billboards in our park and trail area or near the school, period,” Aldermen Dale Welch said.

Had the board wanted to allow the billboard, they could have amended the zoning regulation to allow billboards to locate in C-1 zoning areas as special exception or considered a rezoning for the specific property.

The board ultimately voted to not allow any billboards to be placed on city property.
