Monterey officials voted to apply for a TDEC grant Monday night with the hopes of developing Meadow Creek lake Park.
Monterey grant writer Dawn Kupferer said if awarded the grant, funding would be used to improve recreational opportunities at the 300 plus acre park.
“The cool thing about this piece of property is that is has everything,” Kupferer said. “It has a crag, which is great for rock climbing, it has beautiful terrain for walking or mountain biking, and a lake that is prime for kayaking and canoeing .”
If awarded the $256,000 grant, the funding would help construct a trail, bathroom facility, and handicapped kayak ramp. Monterey will be required to pay a $56,000 local match.
The goal is to make the park into a tourist destination, Kupferer said.
“The economic impact to the region could be enormous,” Kupferer said. “It’s really a collaborative effort on a region that is just primed for tourism development and Monterey is definitely beautiful for that and it brings a lot of people to the city.”
The town should know if they have received the grant by October or November.
