Monterey High School Food Box Giveaway Continues This Friday

Monterey High School continues its weekly food box giveaway Friday morning.

The program is possible through the Monterey Food Pantry and Second Harvest. Principal Sonja Farley said families of Monterey students are the focus.

“The Monterey community comes together,” Farley said. “They help each other so much here, so we do have a lot of kids this is probably the only meal they do have and that’s why it’s so important to help out those parents on the weekends and weekdays.”

Farley said the boxes include non-perishable food such as canned goods and dry food. Farley said up to 20 families participate weekly.

“It’s just a wonderful opportunity knowing the families can come here and they feel safe here and if they have needs they’re welcome to come here,” Farley said. “We’ve tried to help them out in any way possible that we can help them.”

Farley said the giveaway happens at the Monterey High School from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The giveaway has operated since February and will come to a close in May. Farley said the school wants to continue the operation next year.

“We’ve already requested that with Second Harvest,” Farley said. “If the grant comes through for next school year, we are on top of the list.”
