Monterey is in the design phase to bring the Cate-Gill building exterior up-to-date.
Mayor JJ Reels said he is looking at designs similar to the Bethel Inn in town. Reels said a new porch that utilizes stone and wood is being considered.
“One thing we’re looking at is renovating the exterior of the building,” Reels said. “It’s aged. The vinyl siding on it now is brittle. It’s been on there for about 30 years from what I’ve been told. So, we have our engineer working with an architect.”
Reels said the building on Crawford Avenue used to be the gym of the past Monterey High School. Now, four suites make up the building rented out by a dentist, Monterey Medical and the Monterey Food Bank.
“It may be a totally different plan, because there’s been mention of it possibly being brick under there,” Reels said. “So, if that is the case then we may go a different route on it.”
The town’s Healthcare Board recommended the updates to the building. In a separate project, the Board of Aldermen has also approved installing awnings on the exterior windows. Reels said that work is yet to begin with price quotes still coming in.
