A $45,700 grant awarded to Monterey will allow the town to construct phase 3 of its Tennessee Central Heritage Rail Trail.
That announcement made at the town’s board of mayor and aldermen meeting Monday night.
Monterey grant writer Dawn Kupferer said the funding will extend the trail 360 linear feet from the farmers market to Oak Street.
“It’s a good section because it links people from a large residential area to the farmers market,” Kupferer said. “This will help people to exercise more and experience the farmers market on days that its open.”
Once completed the entire trail will be more than a mile, running from Burks Elementary School to Oak Street. The grant will cover 100-percent of the cost to construct the extension.
Grant funding comes from the Tennessee Department of Health.
