Monterey Approves Plan For Fixing Drainage Issue

Monterey aldermen approved two motions Monday aimed at fixing the town’s failing stormwater drainage system.

The first part of the plan will help redirect water from East Commercial Avenue to the railroad tracks. Warren and Associates owner Jerry Warren said the project should bring some immediate flooding relief to property owners along that area.

Jerry Warren shows plans for fixing Monterey’s stormwater drainage issues during Monday’s board of mayor and aldermen meeting. The board approved two motions aimed at fixing the problem.

“The landowners are concerned, I would be too, and you all are concerned from a city standpoint,” Warren said. “We’re trying to look at something that will help all of the parties and hopefully give us a little time so we can search for some additional funding.”

The East Commercial Avenue project will cost the city at least $50,000 and should get underway sometime this summer.

Aldermen approved a second item that sets in motion an expensive long-term fix to the problem. Warren said that the project will involve going underneath the railroad and getting the water to Interstate 40.

“Honestly, if you look at the whole thing, I would not be a bit scared to say that this is $500,000 or more,” Warren said. “That’s provided that we can get the easements and all the permits.”

The board has not yet identified where the funding for the projects will come from. The town does have plans to apply for some federal funding to help with the long-term project.
