Thanks to the town of Monterey, Burks Elementary School students can dance the night away next week.
Town aldermen voted this week to host a free Valentines Day dance for grades 4-8. Alderman Nathan Walker said the board stepped in after the school decided to not have a 6th grade dance this year.
“All that aside, I saw it as an opportunity for the city to put on an event that was especially for the kids,” Walker said. “I think they do a great job there at Burks [elementary] School, but since they weren’t going to do it I thought we could pick up the torch for them.”
Aldermen voted unanimously to spend $500 to host the event at the Monterey Community Center. Walker said a number of local sponsors have also pitched in to help.
“This is why I got involved [in government], just to do these types of things,” Walker said. “I wanted to find things that we can do for the community that makes everybody’s life better. I think this is definitely one of those events.”
The dance will take place Friday, February 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mayor Bill Wiggins said the dance could possible become an annual event for the town.
