The State Fire Marshals Office will conduct an investigation after a fire destroyed a vacant home in Monterey.
Monterey Fire Chief Kevin Peters said the blaze happened early Monday morning on East Louis Avenue.
“When we got here it was coming through the roof already,” Peters said. “No one was living here at the time and we’ve called in some help from the State Fire Marshals Office to see if we can find a determination to what happened.”
Peters said one firefighter fell through the floor of the home but did not suffer any injuries.
“That was pretty scary for him and all of us here, but everything turned out good,” Peters said. “We had a latter standing by so we could deploy it down in the hole and he came right out in just a few seconds.
About seven firefighters responded to the scene. Peters said it took about four hours to contain the fire.
The State Fire Marshals Office will arrive at 9 am Tuesday to begin investigating.
