Newly elected Putnam County Register of Deeds John Sanders said creating a more user-friendly office is his main goal.
Sanders received 53.8 percent of the vote to win the four-person race. Sanders said the work will begin by assessing the current office and making a plan with employees.
“Just like any office that you go into, in time there are things that need to be updated and modernized and we are going to do that,” Sanders said. “Whether that be with updated software or just rearranging the office to some degree, we will make it more user-friendly.”
Sanders said he credited the Republican Party backing him during the caucus as the difference maker in the race. Sanders said seeing the numbers come in with his name on top was an overwhelming experience.
“We’re just excited about it,” Sanders said. “I think there are some good employees there that do a great job now and will continue to do so. We will assess where they are at and what they want to do and start moving forward.”
Sanders said he has worked under Property Assessor Steve Pierce for several years, which has helped his understanding of the position. Register of Deeds handle land deeds and provide public access to those records.
