Missing or Damaged Signs An Issue In Byrdstown

The town of Byrdstown has seen a spike in missing or damaged road or street signs.

The town has replaced about 15 signs already with about 10 more to go. Mayor Sam Gibson said removing or damaging the signs can become a safety concern for residents.

“What I am trying to do is make people aware of the danger of signs being missing,” Gibson said. “You have a lot of emergency equipment that relays on those signs to find someone’s house whether it is an ambulance, fire truck or police officer.”

The Byrdstown Board of Alderman unanimously agreed to put an ad in the paper discouraging sign theft or damage. Gibson said he hopes no further action is needed.

“We do not want to be at fault for not having a sign up and having something really bad happen,” Gibson said. “We want to get it across to individuals the importance of signs, and maybe, they will realize that and leave them alone.”
