The Pickett Civilian Conservation Corps Memorial State Park set to host the annual Old Timer’s Day event on Labor Day.
The annual event began in 1976, featuring food and Upper Cumberland traditional music. Park Ranger Michael Hodge said the park encourages visitors to bring their instruments to play.
“The typical format of the program is to draw from the crowd,” Hodge said. “So we will have people come out and just kind of have jam sessions in the picnic area and then throughout the day they will come up on stage and play and perform.”
Hodge said the event has talented local musicians who capture the culture and music of the Upper Cumberland. Hodge said the park continues to host the event every year to keep the traditional style of music alive.
“Attendance has kind of decreased over the years just because it is Old Timer’s Day,” Hodge said. “You know, a lot of those folks that play that music that practice those traditional styles of music they are not with us anymore and so we are hoping to revitalize it.”
Hodge said he is hopeful for a great turnout this Labor Day. Hodge said traditional music has been a great way to bring people together.
“I think it brings people together,” Hodge said. “It brings families together and it’s kind of a tradition, and just kind of passing these traditions down through families and our children.”
The event will be located at the park’s picnic area. The event will begin on Monday, September 2nd at 10:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM.
