Renovations to McMinnville’s Civic Center should still be completed by September despite minor delays.
McMinnville City Administrator Nolan Ming said with a project this size, you are going to run into problems you did not plan for. The combination of the smaller design problems caused the general contractor to ask for a 21 day extension.
“We were surprised that we had to continue to excavate to get down to some soil that was suitable,” Ming said. “That created a delay there. It was one of the more significant delays.”
Ming said the city is excited for the $9.2 million civic center to reopen. The project will include new facilities, offices and gymnasiums for the public. Ming said this is the biggest capitol project the city has ever undertaken.
“Oh, the best aspects, there are many,” Ming said. “It is a brand new facility. You will not even recognize it both when you drive up to it and walk into it.”
The basketball court will have a brand new floor with six retractable basketball goals and retractable bleachers. On the second level, there will be a new tennis and racquetball court. A new gym with a child drop off area will also be included. On the east wing, a new aerobics room will be added.
The architect for the project is Wold HFR design of Brentwood. The general contractor is Sain Construction of Manchester.
The McMinnville Civic Center was built in the 1970’s. Ming said the building was not ADA compliant and had not been substantially updated since it was built.
