The Warren County Driver Testing Center is now one step away from remaining open until at least the end of next June.
Last week the McMinnville Board of Mayor and Aldermen rejected a measure to fund the center for the next two years. During a special called meeting Monday night board members voted to fund the center for one year at a cost of $4,000 a month.
“It’s our efforts to save a valuable citizen service that we feel like we need to keep here in our county,” McMinnville Mayor Jimmy Haley said. “It’s not just important for the elderly, but also for young people, gun permits, and all the other things that need to be channeled through the department of safety.”
The Warren County Commission also voted unanimously Monday to reimburse the city $2,000 a month to keep the center open.
The state decided not to fund the center in this year’s budget. If the center closes down residents in Warren and surrounding counties will have to drive to Cookeville, Murfreesboro, or Tullahoma to get renewals.
McMinnville’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen will vote on second and final reading of the ordinance later this month.
