Improvements to Double Springs Utility lines and meter replacements could be on the way with proceeds from selling part of the service area to Cookeville.
Double Springs Utility Board member Lynn McHenry said selling the 4.5 mile area was a good move for both parties.
“Although it’s a loss of customers for us, and you definitely don’t want to lose customers, it’s also an agreement within contract from what we had with the city from years ago,” McHenry said. “We’ve got the right amount of money back for those customers to provide even better services for the customers that we’ve retained.”
Cookeville City Council will vote Thursday night on a plan to buy about 500 customers from the district. The price tag: $1.84 million over three years. The two sides have been working for years to complete the sale. Some Utility customers have been in Cookeville City Limits since the 1970s.
McHenry said the board hasn’t mapped out their spending plan. He said the funds could also go toward making up lost revenue.
“Of course, they’re buying not just the right to serve those customers, but they’re buying all the water lines and everything,” McHenry said.
The service area is between Holiday Road to Tennessee Avenue, and from Highway 70 to I-40. McHenry said the main goal for both utility companies is to ensure the community has the best opportunity to be served.
