The Cookeville Police Department responded to a call early Monday morning at 586 South Jefferson Avenue where they found the deceased victim of an apparent gunshot wound.
Lieutenant Anthony Leonard said detectives believe that they located all parties involved, including 36-year-old Christopher Posey of Maryland, who was dead on arrival. He said he believes this was an isolated incident.
“If we’re looking for a suspect who maybe ran on foot or we haven’t located the person of interest in questioning, those would be reasons that we would be more concerned about the public’s safety,” Leonard said. “But in this case, that is not the case here.”
He said detectives struggling to ascertain who shot a weapon or why are indicators that the public may be at risk. He said in this situation, those questions have answers and there is no reason to be concerned for the public’s safety. He said when the investigation concludes, the evidence will be presented to the District Attorney and the case will likely head to a grand jury. With the investigation ongoing, Leonard said he cannot share any additional details of the case at this time.
“We are in a position that we have investigators that are able to respond at any time of the day or night as well, so very thankful for that,” Leonard said. “And, very capable force and we’re grateful for it.”
Leonard said officers are on duty 24/7 and respond quickly to events like this one. He said while unfortunately, these things do happen, they are not common in Cookeville. If anyone has information related to the incident, they are welcome to contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 931-520-5316.
