If you heard a loud boom Sunday afternoon, you aren’t alone.
Emergency officials said a number of Upper Cumberland residents reported hearing the noise around 3:00 p.m.
Putnam County EMA Director Tyler Smith said he also heard the blast, but he can’t confirm what exactly caused it.
“We got a lot of reports of people county-wide hearing the explosion and feeling windows shaking, so I notified TEMA to see if they had any reports,” Smith said. “They said they were unaware of anything happening and they never found out anything about it even later on. We aren’t sure what it was or where it came from.”
Several people speculated on social media that it could have been a cryoseismic boom, which is caused by sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice.
Smith said temperatures would need to be much colder for that event to occur.
