Local Pro: Start Getting Organized For Tax Season

Getting prepared now and getting organized now can be the key to a smooth tax season and a timely refund.

Local Tax Preparation Owner Dakota White said the first step should be proper documentation. White said most people are regular W-2 earners, which allows them to handle things on their own. White said to have all identification and social security numbers checked and ready including children.

“Regular W-2 earners, they, most of them can expect a refund, so they want refunds back as quickly as possible,” White said. “So when things are organized and all the finances are organized properly, it helps my job go by much quicker, which allows them to get a refund quicker.”

White said accuracy and avoiding errors like forgetting information could lead to a rejected tax return. Reflecting on his younger days, White said he used folders to stay organized and outlined significant numbers to make it easier on the CPA.

“Whether our employer emailed or mailed it to us, we print it off and we just have one space for everything that dealt with taxes,” White said. “And usually that was a manila folder labeled 2024 taxes.”

White said being organized helps avoid delays. White said doing this helps out more than you realize.

The tax repairer can efficiently put everything in the tax software and get the refund we needed,” White said. “And it was quite quick.”
