Local Expert: De-Cluttering Good Resolution For Mind

A local organizing expert said de-cluttering is one of the best New Year’s resolutions one can make as it brings more benefits than having a clean space.

Local Organizer Beth Ruck said the new year is when most people try to organize their house or workspace. Ruck said many people get disorganized because they are at a low point in their lives or live a busy life. Ruck said decluttering and being organized is a major boost to a person’s mental health.

“That gives them a good feeling,” Ruck said. “It makes them feel better because they are not weighed down with their stuff that they don’t have to worry about anymore.”

Ruck said though it is a common New Year’s resolution, decluttering can still be tough to complete. Ruck said most people want to be organized but are not sure where to start.

“A lot of people have the big broad I want to get organized but they don’t know what to do,” Ruck said. “They think if they just go and buy all the storage containers that are on sale in January that it’s going to fix the problem, so a lot of people that is their intention but they don’t really know how to go about it to be successful.”

Ruck said one tip for people who want to be organized is to set their sights smaller to start with. Ruck said she asks clients which rooms are the most bothering.

“We need to break that down into smaller pieces,” Ruck said. “Tell me the top two areas that are bothering you in your home or office that if you could get that under control it would make you feel so much better.”

Ruck said people should ask if the items in the way are being used, something you want or something you need. Ruck said if you do not say yes to any of those questions then get rid of the item.

Ruck said most items are useful and the best way to get rid of items that have value is to donate them to charities that way those who are unfortunate can use the items.
