Local Chapter Celebrates MLK Legacy Monday

The Cookeville-Putnam NAACP will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday.

Branch Secretary Geeta McMillan said the lunch aims to raise awareness of the ongoing civil rights movement. McMillan said the event reflects the values and efforts Dr. King dedicated his life to.

“We hope that folks basically come to grips with the impact that Martin Luther King had on the United States,” McMillan said. “As well as the ongoing efforts that the local NAACP branch works for on a daily basis.”

McMillan said over the decades, advancements have been made for all people of color. She said that celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. helps move the civil rights movement forward. McMillan said she looks forward to seeing NAACP members and those interested.

“We want folks to understand there is a lot more work to do,” McMillan said. “Many hands make light work, in other words, the more people that we have participating and understanding the struggles that our nation is built on, which is equality and equity for all.”

McMillan said the lunch will include keynote speakers, a rendition of the “I Have A Dream” speech, a youth choir, and additional vocal performances. McMillan said there is a place for everyone, ensuring equality remains a priority. She said tickets can be found online by searching for NAACP Cookeville Putnam.

“We do have speakers, specifically talking about the goals of the civil rights movement and reflecting on the progress that has been made,” McMillan said. “And continuing to make progress in those areas. We are fortunate this year we have judge Robin Hayes out of Nashville as our Keynote speaker.”

McMillan said one of the main goals is understanding the need for equality for all people of color.

The event begins Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the Leslie Town Center.
