Recent Livingston Academy graduate Halle Ledbetter named the recipient of the Bill Penn Broadcast Scholarship.
During her time at Livingston Academy, Ledbetter played both basketball and golf all four years of high school. She said she plans to continue her education at Middle Tennessee State University where she will major in Journalism Sports Media.
“Just the atmosphere of all the football games really drew me in, and I like to talk obviously, I’m used to being on camera and things like that so I grew my confidence in that field,” Ledbetter said. “So the sports, the talking combined, I just felt that would be a good profession for me.”
Ledbetter said her goal is to become a sideline reporter. She said she was inspired by her dad coaching local sports to pursue a career in this field.
The award honors the long broadcast career of Bill Penn, who served Cookeville and Putnam County through his radio work for more than 35 years. It is open to students interested in studying broadcasting, journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design, or related fields.
“It really really helps me a lot, I plan on living off campus so living in an apartment and everything will be tough,” Ledbetter said. “And just the thought of getting noticed and stuff like that with my current resume helps my confidence a lot going into my profession. So just getting this award helps me confidence more than anything.”
