The City of Livingston is looking for umpires for their summer baseball leagues.
Parks and Recreation Director Michael Hayes said that after the pandemic, many of their umpires stepped away from the game, leaving a greater need for them this season.
“These guys are what helps make the league–without umpires, it’s kind of hard to have a season going on , and we definitely got to have them like we have coaches,” Hayes said. “They play a big part in their role in the league.”
Hayes said games are going on Monday through Friday with all of their leagues, going from the kids’ tee-ball league to the adults’ Babe Ruth league.
“Games start at 6:00 p.m., for boys’ baseball games we start at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., of course tee-ball is a little different,” Hayes said. “Basically you come, and of course the umpires will come on the field for their coaches’ meeting, and get the teams started and set, and they start playing ball.”
Hayes said that umpiring is a great way to earn some extra cash while giving back to the community.
“Whenever you do it at a local level–this is not like college or high school–a lot of guys like to come and make a little extra money through the week and not have the pressure that high school officials may have or college officials,” Hayes said. “A lot of guys just like to come and make a little side money while helping the community out.”
Hayes said that anyone above the age of 16 can come apply to be an umpire, and that if you’d like more information to contact City Hall.
