Livingston Alderman Starts Conversation On Term Limits

Livingston Alderman Kelly Coleman said city officials should consider setting term limits for elected officials.

Currently, the Livingston charter allows the mayor and aldermen to serve an unlimited amount terms. Coleman said he suggests using Cookeville’s two-term limit as a model.

“Does that require a charter change,” Coleman said. “Or can it be put on a referendum for the people to voice their opinion. I’m unsure what that process is. I would like to begin that conversation.”

Mayor Curtis Hayes said the Board of Aldermen would have to approve that change first. Then, the General Assembly must vote on the item. If passed, the change would come back to city officials for final adoption.

Discussion over term limits was placed on August’s agenda by Hayes after Coleman’s discussion.

“We can out it on the agenda,” Hayes said.

“Yeah we can put it on the agenda,” Coleman said. “That would be great.”
