New garlands and bows with Christmas lights will be coming to the streets of Downtown Livingston this holiday season.
Downtown Revitalization Committee Chairman Ray Evans said part of the city’s sales tax rebate will be used to replace the 15 year old street light decorations.
“Considering all the trials and tribulations that the merchants and business owners on the square have gone through this year, we just thought it would be a good gesture to invest sales tax rebate funds for improvements for Christmas.”
Evans said the decorations will run from the square down Spring Street to Central Park. Large clusters of stacked ornaments will also be placed around the grounds of the courthouse.
“Last year, we used some of these same funds to purchase a 15 foot Christmas tree,” Evans said, “This is a continuation of what we have done in previous years to try and make the courthouse square much more festive and enjoyable at Christmas.”
Sales tax rebate funds must be used in the central business district where the sales tax revenues were generated. Livingston received over $300,000 to spend in the downtown area. Evans said the city has three companies in mind to purchase the decorations from.
“If we ordered them today, at least one of the companies said that they can be delivered within two to three days.” Evans said.
The Livingston Board of Alderman approved the spending of $16,000 to replace the street light decorations during Monday’s meeting.
