The State Fire Marshal has concluded that a lightning strike caused a large fire to break out at a DeKalb County condominium unit Monday.
The fire destroyed a single unit at the Highland Cove Condos causing an estimated $1 million in damages.
Fire Chief Donny Green said firefighters returned to the complex Wednesday when a maintenance worker reported another fire at an adjacent unit. Crews determined that the same lightning strike caused a gas line to rupture an expose a concrete floor to an open flame.
Green said the fire went unseen and continued to burn after the lightning strike on Sunday night.
