Beginning next week all 132-state lawmakers will be moving their offices to the Cordell Hull Building in Nashville.
Cookeville State Representative Ryan Williams said at first, he didn’t like the idea of moving, but now he’s all for it.
“Now that I have been actively involved in assisting the Speaker of the House and Lieutenant Governor for the last several months, it is a better solution,” Williams said. “It’s also a better solution because it allows more room and greater access for constituents when they come to visit.”
State lawmakers have spent decades inside legislative plaza in Nashville, but that building was in need of upgrades. Officials decided it would make more sense to make improvements to the Cordell Hull Building, which will cost the state some $126 million.
In addition to being the new home to all 132-lawmakers, the Cordell Hull Building will also provide space for several government offices, including the Office of the Comptroller and the entire legislative branch, which currently resides in three buildings, as well as the Capitol Hill press corps.
Williams said during the move there will be a three day period where lawmakers won’t have access to emails, phones, or voicemail, but it doesn’t mean constituents questions and concerns won’t be answered.
“It will be challenging to get a hold of me directly through the Legislative Plaza via email, but as soon as we get back up in running we will get back to them,” Williams said. “They can always call our phone number and we can access it through our mobile devices, but we just won’t have a PC in front of us.”
