The (7-2) Clay County Bulldogs face the (6-3) Gordonsville Tigers Friday night in the 4-1A Region Championship and Bulldog head coach Bruce Lamb said these games matter to his players.
After their week five loss to Portland, Clay County has strung together four straight wins, Lamb said his players are peaking at the right time. He said his players match his competitive spirit and are focused on wrapping up their season with some hardware at home in Celina.
“Winning is a lot to them,” Lamb said. “It’s okay to lose, but you don’t have to like it and they don’t like it. And you know, they’re going to do everything they can to get those wins.”
Coming off of back to back shut-out wins, Lamb said he had a tremendous amount of confidence in his team moving forward. He said his team will have to play with a level of confidence with the incoming Tigers, who are lead by head coach Stephen Jackson.
“They take advantages of everybody’s weaknesses and they got some really good football players,” Lamb said. “And it starts with their quarterback J Foster and we’re going to have our hands full. Because they got players and they got great coaches and it’s going to be tough.”
Both the Bulldogs and Tigers are 2-0 in region play, and Friday’s game will decide the #1 and #2 seed in the 4-1A region. The Tigers are coming off of a 45-35 loss to Bledsoe County last week.
Lamb said a source of his confidence comes from seeing his players reach a new level of intensity and maturity.
“It’s a confidence, it’s not an arrogance,” Lamb said. “I’ve watched them in practice each week and each day and you can see they believe in each other, they not what each other is going to do.”
