Kid’s Karate Class Returns To Cane Creek Rec In August

Cane Creek Recreation is bringing back its kids karate lessons this August.

Recreational Programmer Sally Herren said that instructor Nikki Desch works with the children to enhance their skills, as well as provides them with a fun form of exercise.

“And she has been teaching martial arts for 30 years,” Herren said. “And she’s really great with the children and teaching them about the ‘no limits’ style of karate.”

Herren said their “no limits” karate style serves to boost the confidence of the kids while also learning to defend themselves. She said the class has grown very popular with the students.

“There was one student who had loved it so much he had missed one and was upset about it,” Herren said. “So he scheduled an appointment with Nikki to make up that class because he wanted to stay with it with everyone else.”

Herren said that the course is for kids of all ages, from beginners to novices. She said that Desch works to ensure that all kids receive adequate training regardless of skill level.

“If they’ve never done karate before she’ll start them out from the beginning,” Herren said. “And then if they’re returning students then she’ll just continue on their training and give them the next level of karate training. And if you’re just starting out you’ll start out from the beginning with the basics.”

The course is open to children ages six to twelve, and will be held Tuesday’s August 3rd to 24th at from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. To register, go to their page on Cookeville Leisure Services’ website, or give Cane Creek Recreation a call. There is a $25 registration fee.
