The Keep Putnam County Beautiful Commission is trying to engage as many Putnam County residents as possible to remove as much litter as possible.
Executive Director Rob Wright said that’s why the commission is hosting its annual Putnam Proud Clean-Up event. Wright said that littering is an issue that occurs both purposefully and accidentally, and is something the community should work together to rectify.
“Litter hurts everything,” Wright said. “Litter gets into our waterways and it starts to erode, it harms animals, it’s an eyesore. IF you live in a community that’s a little too polluted, it’s got a lot of litter, it can lower property values in your area.”
Wright said that currently there are 18 groups participating. He said groups can pick designated times and locations that work best with their schedules, and the clean commission will meet with them to provide all necessary supplies.
Wright said that the issue of litter is prevalent in most areas, which is why it’s important to come together to give back to the community and make it a beautiful place for everyone.
“We get a lot of phone calls from people in our community who are driving along some of our main roads and they see a lot of trash and it happens for many multitudes of reasons. It would be hard to find anybody anywhere who said that they went somewhere and did not find any trash anywhere.”
Wright said the commission is still taking sign-ups from both groups and individuals that want to participate in the clean-up. He said that there are several days for individuals without an organization are able to join in the effort:
