Jefferson Avenue COC: 150 Years Of Service

Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ celebrates 150 years of service and worship this year.

Minister Andy Brewster said the church was first identified in 1871. The original members met in their homes before establishing a meeting place located near the Courthouse Square which is now known as Lowe Avenue.

“It is truly an amazing story,” Brewster said. “I think there were five people that started those 150 years ago, and of course, it has seen so many people. A number of the churches around here, Collegeside was a church plant that Jefferson Avenue was a part of.”

Brewster said the congregation landed at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Jackson Street in the 1960’s. Brewster said membership now stands at about 150 people every Sunday.

“They’ve had a couple of expansions during that time,” Brewster said. “They moved down from Broad Street as where the congregation previously was. I think when they moved here there wasn’t really anything out here. So, people thought it was kind of strange to move so far out of town, but of course now, it is right in the middle of everything.”

Brewster said the church actively supports several local schools and mission trips across the world to spread the gospel.
