JCHS For First Time Ever Will Offer Advanced Placement Classes

Jackson County High School will offer Advanced Placement classes for the first time ever next semester.

Principal Jason Hardy said this became a reality thanks to the state recognizing this rural district with limited resources, does deserve access. Hardy said he is excited to give students a chance to push themselves and experience a college level course, for free.

“We have those students that are on the border about going to college, if they can try it out for free here during high school,” Hardy said. “I definitely think that would encourage them, that they could have the opportunity to go and be successful at the next level.”

Hardy said the school will offer at least seven Advanced Placement courses, ranging from physics to United States History. Hardy said the school is explaining the AP courses to parents and students in the lead up to November registration.

He said classes will be up and ready to go in January.

“Give them an opportunity to earn college credits before they get into college which is great and will save them money in the long run,” Hardy said. “But even if they don’t pass the exam and get the college credit, it will give them the opportunity to see how college classes are ran. Then when they get there, I think their chances for success will really, really be improved.”

Hardy said it is a continued effort to put students in a position to pursue secondary education. He said now students have a better chance to be successful when they get to college, similar to dual enrollment.

“Being a rural school with sometimes limited opportunities and the teachers and staff you have available,” Hardy said. “Sometimes it makes these smaller classes… we can’t make it happen. So this gives these students an opportunity to take classes that will really push them.”

Hardy said AP Physics, Art, World and Human Geography, Biology, Music, English and United States history will be offered.
