Jamestown To Honor Local Heroes With Field Of Flags Event

The Jamestown City Park Soccer Field will be lined with 100 flags starting Saturday.

The flags represent a different local hero whether it be a military member, a first responder or a teacher. Rotary Club member Crystal Tompkins said this is the first time a Field of Flags has been showcased in Jamestown.

“When you sit there and see these flags flying in the wind it gives you, besides I’m very patriotic, it gives you that patriotic feeling, but it’s very humbling of all the people that you know that’s in your community that has served in one form of another,” Tompkins said. “It’s just American pride.”

Tompkins said she got the idea to do a Field of Flags after seeing other communities host similar events. She said she was particularly impressed with a Field of Flags event held in Crossville last year that featured 500 flags.

“It honors people’s loved ones,” Tompkins said. “It honors our county. It honors our state and our country. It shows people that we live in one of the best places in the world to be able to have this privilege to do this.”

Flags were purchased for $35 and come with a medallion that serves as a commemorative item. All proceeds go to the Jamestown Rotary Club. Tompkins said she plans to do the event annually and you can go ahead and purchase a flag now for next year.

“Hopefully every year this is going to be a great fundraiser for the rotary club, which our money goes to support our scholarships for our kids that we do,” Tompkins said. “It’s just going to be a phenomenal event.”

The closing ceremony for the event will be Sunday, November 12 at 2pm.
