Jamestown Looking to Update Airport

Jamestown Mayor Lyndon Baines hopes to update the municipal airport.

Baines said he’s working on a three phase project with TDOT and FAA to improve the runway and North taxiway.

“We’ve already got the first phase going right now with a $228,000 grant to get in the planning stage,” Baines said. “After that, we will move to phase two, which is a $3 million grant through the FAA.”

Mayor Baines said it’s important that the city shows the FAA its intent to make improvements. The $3 million FAA grant would be 100-percent, meaning Jamestown would not be required to provide a match.

Baines said the improvements are necessary because of businesses that may want to locate in Fentress County and Jamestown.

“Nine times out of ten they’re gonna fly in and the first impression when they get to Jamestown is looking at our airport and the runway falling apart,” Baines said. “I think we need to update and look towards the future of the airport.”

Baines said he would meeting with TDOT and FAA officials sometime after the new year.
