The Jackson County Veterans Hall and Archives searching for public designs for a new mural on the Short Street office.
Treasurer Bill Draper said the plan is to have the artwork displayed on the north wall facing the main highway through Gainesboro.
“I’ve been kind of worried about the appearance of that wall for sometime,” Draper said. “In the past, we had a water leak that caused us some considerable fading on that wall.”
Draper said county officials support the opportunity, but the next question is what will the artwork entail. Draper said he decided to open submissions to gain ideas from residents.
“I discussed it with the county mayor and members of the board for the archives and veterans hall and the chamber of commerce. Everybody seems to think it is a good idea,” Draper said. “Of course if we get that done, it will also eliminate the need to have it painted.”
Draper said he wants the art to portray what the Veterans Hall and Archives represents. Draper said designs can be submitted to 413 East Hull Street in Gainesboro.
Draper said the winning art will receive a small cash prize and also have their name included on the mural. Draper said he would like to present designs to the Veterans Hall and Archives Board first of the year. Then, finding a funding source will be the next step.
