Jackson Schools Taking Applications For Pre-K Program

Jackson County Schools are now taking applications for its Pre-K programs.

Director of Schools Kristy Brown said it’s an opportunity for students to get ahead in their education before they begin kindergarten.

“I know that our teachers work a lot on students making friends and getting used to coming to school,” Brown said. “Especially if they’ve been home and not outside of the house very much. And also on sounds, reading,  and some of those basic skills.”

Brown said that the Pre-K program does have requirements. She said students must be at least four years old by August 15th, and that families must meet an income eligibility requirement.

“And that is certainly a priority,” Brown said. “And we are not able to enroll students that do not meet that eligibility requirement until we’ve exhausted our outreach to family that do. That is just the guideline set out by the program to be able to fund it.”

Brown said that the program caters to all students, but most importantly to students who might not have access to a Pre-K program otherwise.

Brown said they will have a registration day on Friday, August 6th, and will take applications until then. She said it’s beneficial to the program to get applications in early so it can begin preparations, and be able to hit the ground running when it comes to the programs’ start dates. Jackson County Schools have three Pre-K programs at Gainesboro Elementary, Jackson County Middle School, and Dodson Branch School.
