Jackson Purchases New Backhoe To Replace Totaled One

The Jackson County Commission Monday night approved the purchase of a new backhoe to replace one that was totaled.

Road Superintendent Daniel Garrison said the old backhoe declared a total loss because of an accident. Garrison said the lowest bid he received for a replacement of the same horsepower would cost just over $132,000.

“Went through the insurance process,” Garrison said. “They totaled it. We could have bought it back, but yet it had a lot of liability left through the highway department, so I made the decision just to go ahead and sell.”

Garrison said the money that would be needed was already allocated to their equipment fund and he just needed approval from the commission to spend it. He said the insurance for the totaled backhoe will pay out around $86,000 to help pay for the replacement.

Garrison said the old backhoe has already been taken away. Garrison said the new backhoe is the same model as one that the county purchased last year.

“It’s the same machine they’ve got,” Garrison said. “Same tires, same filters, same everything.”

In other business, commissioners approved an update to the county road list that would properly reflect which roads the county is already handling the maintenance for.
