Jackson FD Shares Safety Tips For Jack-O’-Lanterns, Bonfires

Fire safety, another important conversation to have while preparing for the Halloween weekend.

Jackson County Central Fire Chief Jeff Conn said jack-o’-lanterns on front porches present fire hazards if not properly displayed.

“To me, it’s very important to make sure that we don’t have anything very close to those that could be flammable, especially if it is windy,” Conn said. “It’s just good to keep an eye out. Sometimes it’s good to keep an eye out on them. Sometimes it’s good to keep a little jug of water maybe on your front porch wherever you have them in case they were to catch fire.”

Conn said bonfires are also popular this time of year, so be mindful of dry foliage and the wind direction. Conn said keep a hose nearby with the potential of a brush fire breaking out.

“Thankfully, I have not come across a lot of injuries or anything as far as jack-o’-lanterns,” Conn said. “It’s always common with brush fires this time of year to get out of hand and catch yards on fire.”

Conn said often times, children wear costumes with flowing fabric that could touch a flame in a jack-o’-lantern. Conn said in the event clothing catches fire, stop, drop and roll.
