Jackson County To Pay Insurance Cost Increase

Jackson County Commissioners voted Monday night to take on a slight increase in costs to keep the current health insurance packages for county employees.

County Mayor Randy Heady said the insurance is only going up around nine dollars. Heady said the cost for the cheapest insurance package will total $495. Heady said the insurance packages the county already uses has been critical to the county.

“I’ll tell you this much insurance has been really good as a recruitment tool to hang onto people,” Heady said. “We have 60 signed up on health insurance. When I came into office there were only 19 of us, so I know it costs but I feel like it’s the right thing to do.”

Heady said he budgeted this year to take on the increase. Heady said the new insurance will not take effect until January. Open enrollment takes place next month.

Heady said the insurance is helpful as he is using it himself for his cancer treatments.

“Take it from someone who is using it, its good insurance,” Heady said. “Using it in a big way.”

There will still be multiple insurance packages that employees can choose from. Heady said if an employee wants a higher package than the base cost covered by the county then the employee can choose to do so, but the employee will have to pay the difference.

In other Business, Jackson County Commissioners re-elected Mayor Randy Heady as Chairman and re-elected Commissioner Joey Denson as Vice-Chairman.

Commissioners approved to post a 40-mile-per-hour speed limit sign on White Spin Rd. The road currently does not have a speed limit so the speed limit sign by default was 55 miles per hour. The suggestion came up after a petition was turned in with speeding complaints.

Commissioners approved to appointment of Brandon Curley to the Industrial Development Board.
