A Jackson County son is asking community members to send birthday cards for his mother, set to turn 90.
Harold Scott was planning a birthday celebration for his mother, Marie, before COVID-19 shut down the assisted living facility she resides in. Instead he began a birthday card campaign on the internet.
“I kinda dubbed it ‘#CelebratemyMOM,'” Scott said. “I originally did a posting on Facebook just asking people to send her a card and provided all that information. It’s kinda gone viral.”
Scott said his mother has gone above and beyond to take care of others her whole life. He said she raised six children and has multiple grandchildren. Marie was a caregiver for her late husband with Alzheimers, and for her only daughter who lives with cerebral palsy.
Marie loves to crochet, cook, and listen to Dailey and Vincent, a local bluegrass band. Scott said she was born in the Sugar Creek community and has lived in Jackson County her entire life.
Scott said both his mother and sister reside at Mabry Health Care and Rehab Center in Gainesboro.
“I would like for people just to send her a card,” Scott said. “She’s gotten a few already, and she’s really really enjoying it. With the facility being on lock down, it really helps to pass the time and it gives her something to look forward to.”
So far Scott’s mother has received over 150 birthday cards. Her birthday is August 30.
Birthday cards can be sent to Marie Scott C/O Mabry Health Care And Rehab Center, 1340 N. Grundy Quarles Hwy., Room A6, Gainesboro TN 38562.
