Jackson County Schools approved a work-based learning opportunity for high school seniors to help with cafeteria duties, created by the pandemic.
School Director Kristy Brown said students will get $8 an hour, working two hours a day, helping distribute meals for students learning remotely. Although, Brown said she will request this gets paid for with CARES Act money.
“We’re going to request that we’re able to pay the pay for just those couple of hours a day, handing out virtual meals through that grant money,” Brown said. “Because it has been caused by this pandemic and we’re hopeful that will be approved.”
Brown said that besides offering extra help to cafeteria staff, it is a good opportunity for work-based learning. However, she said these opportunities can be difficult for students to get to.
“We try to place students in jobs locally here, if we can, and maybe in Cookeville if there’s not a place here for them. We do have students that struggle with transportation obstacles like that,” Brown said. “There’s a need for our cafeteria staff to have some help with passing out these meals for our virtual students.”
Brown said the plan is to start with two students. She said this could potentially expand to four students.
