Jackson County Reaches Settlement with Fired Chief Deputy

A fired Chief Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has reached a settlement with his former employer.

Chief Deputy Chris Carter was fired six days after giving a statement to the Tennessee Comptroller’s office. The statement included his knowledge of Jackson County Sheriff Marty Hinson reportedly using a county credit card for unauthorized uses.

That’s when Carter filed a federal lawsuit claiming violation of constitutional rights and unlawful employment practices. According to the complaint filed in federal court, Hinson told Carter, “Turn your badge in. Your services are no longer needed.”

The lawsuit seeks damages from Jackson County, the sheriff’s department and Hinson. However, according to paperwork from the Middle District of Tennessee Federal Courts, a settlement was reached.
