Jackson County Proclamation Will Establish John Cason Day

Jackson County Proclamation Will Establish John Cason Day this Saturday honoring the community icon.

Cason was born in Jackson County and served the community throughout his life including 24 years as commissioner, County Farm Bureau Board Director for 20 years, and a term as mayor.  Cason’s sister Cherry Ramsey said she established a scholarship to commemorate her brother’s love of Jackson County and  agriculture.

“So he was just a community icon I guess and everybody loved him and he passed away last July,” Ramsey said. “And everybody wanted to do something so I established a scholarship with the local high school.”

Ramsey said  the mayor’s proclamation will establish the third Saturday in July as John Cason Day. She said three local representatives that he had worked with will speak about his contributions to the county.

Ramsey said the day will kickoff at Helen’s Restaurant at noon with catfish and chicken plates. She said they will have a bounce house and face painting for the kids along with Bluegrass bands playing live music throughout the day.

“At the end of the day we’ll have a live auction to raise money for the scholarship,” Ramsey said. “People have donated baskets, wood working, Air B&B and cottage stays, and gift certificates to local businesses.”

Ramsey said Dillon Porterfield was the first recipient of the John Cason Scholarship in May.
