The Jackson County Penny Rate is up for the 8th straight year.
Mayor Randy Heady reported to the Jackson County Commission Monday night that the current Penny Rate is $17,351. He said it is something the county has worked really hard to improve.
“We’re very proud of that,” Heady said. “I think I mentioned at the County Commission meeting that it’s up $2,273 over the past 8-years. It’s been a steady climb, and it’s been good. It’s very helpful. It’s how we get to do the things we do.”
Heady said the majority of the penny rate is used to fund the Solid Waste budget. He said the penny rate increases as property tax values increase.
“A penny is worth so much money,” Heady said. “So, the penny rate dictates how much money we bring in, and our penny is over $17,000 this year.”
Heady said the county has been fortunate to have more people building homes in Jackson County, helping raise the penny rate. He also praised Property Assessor Tim Bowman’s work in capturing improved property values around the county.
“We’re seeing an influx of people moving into Jackson County,” Heady said. “And buying property and building houses. We’re rural, and that’s a good thing for us because of the tax base.”
